What currency is used in Spain?In common with most countries within the European Union, Spain adopted the Euro. The conversion was done in January 2002. The coinage consists of eight different coins, being: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents, € 1 and € 2 with seven different denominations of notes: € 5, € 10, € 20, € 50, € 100, € 200, and € 500. There are 100 cents to make up one Euro. Where in Spain can I exchange foreign currency?All major cities and most towns and resorts have outlets offering currency exchange; these can be found in the high street plus hotels and travel agencies. Naturally banks also provide a currency exchange service; opening hours are generally from 8.30 to 14.00 from Monday to Saturday, although during the summer months from June to September banks remain closed on Saturdays. What other forms of payment are accepted in Spain?Credit card: For shoppers most of the major name credit cards are accepted at Spanish shops and businesses. Signs are normally displayed at store entrances to signify this. Traveller's cheques: Most hotels, restaurants, shops and service businesses accept Traveller's cheques, for which a valid passport will need to be presented. Is tipping mandatory in Spain?Tipping is a common practice at bars, restaurants, hotels and for taxi use and is dependent on the total price paid for the service, although usually around five to ten percent of the total price is acceptable.
